Naturally One Would Rather Be A Broad Artist With Power To Evoke Beauty From Every Phase Of Experience--but When One Unmistakably Isn't Such An Artist, There's No Sense In Bluffing And Faking And Pretending That One Is.

One Can't Write A Weird Story Of Real Power Without Perfect Psychological Detachment From The Human Scene, And A Magic Prism Of Imagination Which Suffuses Them And Style Alike With That Grotesquerie And Disquieting Distortion Characteristic Of Morbid Vision. Only A Cynic Can Create Horror - For Behind Every Masterpiece Of The Sort Must Reside A Driving Daemonic Force That Despises The Human Race And Its Illusions, And Longs To Pull Them To Pieces And Mock Them.

I Am Only About Half Alive - A Large Part Of My Strength Is Consumed In Sitting Up Or Walking. My Nervous System Is A Shattered Wreck, And I Am Absolutely Bored & Listless Save When I Come Upon Something Which Peculiarly Interests Me. However - So Many Things Do Interest Me, & Interest Me Intensely, In Science, History, Philosophy, & Literature; That I Have Never Actually Desired To Die, Or Entertained Any Suicidal Designs, As Might Be Expected Of One With So Little Kinship To The Ordinary Features Of Life.

The Poetical Tendency Of The Present And Of The Preceding Century Has Been Divided In A Manner Singularly Curious. One Loud And Conspicuous Faction Of Bards, Giving Way To The Corrupt Influences Of A Decaying General Culture, Seems To Have Abandoned All The Properties Of Versification And Reason In Its Mad Scramble After Sensational Novelty; Whilst The Other And Quieter School Constituting A More Logical Evolution From The Poesy Of The Georgian Period, Demands An Accuracy Of Rhyme And Metre Unknown Even To The Polished Artists Of The Age Of Pope.

I Have Dwelt Ever In Realms Apart From The Visible World; Spending My Youth And Adolescence In Ancient And Little-known Books, And In Roaming The Fields And Groves Of The Region Near My Ancestral Home. I Do Not Think That What I Read In These Books Or Saw In These Fields And Groves Was Exactly What Other Boys Read And Saw There; But Of This I Must Say Little, Since Detailed Speech Would But Confirm Those Cruel Slanders Upon My Intellect Which I Sometimes Overhear From The Whispers Of The Stealthy Attendants Around Me.
