People Of The Same Trade Seldom Meet Together, Even For Merriment And Diversion, But The Conversation Ends In A Conspiracy Against The Public, Or In Some Contrivance To Raise Prices. It Is Impossible Indeed To Prevent Such Meetings, By Any Law Which Either Could Be Executed, Or Would Be Consistent With Liberty Or Justice. But Though The Law Cannot Hinder People Of The Same Trade From Sometimes Assembling Together, It Ought To Do Nothing To Facilitate Such Assemblies; Much Less To Render Them Necessary.

In The Long-run The Workman May Be As Necessary To His Master As His Master Is To Him, But The Necessity Is Not So Immediate.

All Registers Which, It Is Acknowledged, Ought To Be Kept Secret, Ought Certainly Never To Exist.

This Great Increase Of The Quantity Of Work Which, In Consequence Of The Division Of Labour, The Same Number Of People Are Capable Of Performing, Is Owing To Three Different Circumstances; First, To The Increase Of Dexterity In Every Particular Workman; Secondly, To The Saving Of The Time Which Is Commonly Lost In Passing From One Species Of Work To Another; And Lastly, To The Invention Of A Great Number Of Machines Which Facilitate And Abridge Labour, And Enable One Man To Do The Work Of Many.

A Man Must Always Live By His Work, And His Wages Must At Least Be Sufficient To Maintain Him. They Must Even Upon Most Occasions Be Somewhat More; Otherwise It Would Be Impossible For Him To Bring Up A Family, And The Race Of Such Workmen Could Not Last Beyond The First Generation.
