Our Relationship With The Followers Of Islam Has Taken On Great Importance, Since They Are Now Significantly Present In Many Traditionally Christian Countries, Where They Can Freely Worship And Become Fully A Part Of Society. We Must Never Forget That They "profess To Hold The Faith Of Abraham, And Together With Us They Adore The One, Merciful God, Who Will Judge Humanity On The Last Day".

The Golden Rule Reminds Us Of Our Responsibility To Protect And Defend Human Life At Every Stage Of Its Development. This Conviction Has Led Me, From The Beginning Of My Ministry, To Advocate At Different Levels For The Global Abolition Of The Death Penalty.

Lent Is A Fitting Time For Self-denial; We Would Do Well To Ask Ourselves What We Can Give Up In Order To Help And Enrich Others By Our Own Poverty. Let Us Not Forget That Real Poverty Hurts: No Self-denial Is Real Without This Dimension Of Penance. I Distrust A Charity That Costs Nothing And Does Not Hurt.
